Chess Festival set for launch

With club development officer Nathan Goldberg at the helm, preparations for the forthcoming Horsham Chess Festival are gathering pace.

This event promises to put Horsham on the map as a quality venue for chess, with potential GM/IM visitors, a weekend congress, a simultaneous display and events for juniors.  More details in due course.

This year we welcome Nkosi and Melusi Nkomo to the club, and wish them all the best in the Bishop and the MSL.  Tony Locke is now available to play for Horsham following the closure of the Hassocks club (thanks for the new boards & sets Tony!).  Finally we welcome back Paul Kington after a long absence - Paul also will be taking part in the Bishop.

Horsham Junior Chess Club regular Steven Taylor was the inaugural winner of the Peter Alford Cup for junior competition.  With a score of 8.5 out of 9 he was the clear victor of last season's HJCC tournament.

Steven was presented with the trophy, purchased with the funds donated by Horsham Chess Club members in memory of Peter, on Tuesday October 18th.  Mrs. Aileen Alford, Peter's widow, made the presentation along with her son Simon.  The subsequent picture and report in the County Times was very well received by club members.
